BATH
Come away with us for a week in the beautiful area of BATH in Somerset, England. Made famous by many literary and films through the year from Jane Austen to Bridgerton, Bath is a UNESCO heritage site and a stones throw from some of England’s most picturesque rolling countryside hills. Popular from pre-Roman times because of the plentiful natural thermal springs, history abounds here from the ancient Roman baths, to the Abbey, the river Avon, and Pulteney Bridge.
Bath is best described as ' An Intimate London' because of its ability to combine Old World heritage with New World living, it has all that a large city has to offer but is perfectly placed to ensure that everything is fully accessible by foot, eliminating the stress of transportation. Bath today is the only remaining “truly quintessential” city in the UK.
The retreat will be hosted at the beautiful boutique Francis Hotel. A dramatic destination that is quintessentially English, The Francis Hotel Bath is a magnificent example of Georgian architecture in a timeless city. Bath itself is a World Heritage Site and home to a myriad of nostalgic attractions around every corner, from the Roman Baths and the Royal Crescent to the Jane Austen Centre.
A historic hotel overlooking Bath’s first Georgian square.
A Grade I listed building with a history of hospitality, The Francis Hotel Bath occupies a coveted position moments from the most popular sights of this great British spa city.
The Francis Hotel Bath occupies a coveted position on Queen Square. On arrival, you will be met by Regency opulence, modern amenities, a friendly team, and impeccably designed areas for drinking and dining. Stop for a drink in our bar or enjoy a meal cooked over the hearth at our stunning restaurant, Emberwood. Whatever your reason for stepping through our doors, we look forward to welcoming you.
ACTIVITIES
Guests will not only enjoy the hotel property with its Georgian decor, common areas, restaurant/bar, and full spa, but will also have plenty of time to explore the city, the site and also a day trip to the Neolithic site of Avebury, a drive through the picturesque countryside and a visit to a garden manor . The week begins with a guided walking tour to allow guests to get their bearings in city with its fascinating history. We’ll focus some time in the art space to document the images and inspiration that we collected. Another day will be outside of the city to see various sites like ancient stones and henge of Avebury, and a countryside manor. There will be some time to paint plein air and we’ll continue our exploration of Bath centre throughout the rest of the week with a proper English high-tea and other fun excursions.
CUISINE
After a welcome cocktail reception, we will be indulging in a variety of fare during our luxurious week - from award-winning kitchens in Bath, the gourmet tasting menu at the hotel’s restaurant, and gastropubs, to private access dining rooms, and a high tea at a historic locale. Our program includes daily breakfast, and most lunches and dinners (there are a couple occasions where meals are during freetime for guests so they can arrange as they prefer).
ART
Daily art classes will be offered in a beautiful studio space in a magnificent Georgian square in the heart of Bath, a stone’s throw from our hotel. The classes will tie in with all of our painting and drawing activities as we enjoy our excursions in the city during the day. Please note that all art materials needed will be supplied. Our courses are carefully designed for complete beginners with no previous experience as well as intermediate artists who would like to improve their skills/techniques, and, of course, practicing artists looking for a new inspiration. Julian, the host and instructor, has over 30 years of experience teaching students of all ages and abilities, and always strives to create a friendly and relaxed atmosphere. Read more about his story on the ABOUT page. These unique courses also reflect the culture, art, and history of the area and are interwoven with art-history excursions, providing inspiration, variety and interest throughout the week. Above all, this is a real opportunity for developing artists to work in small groups alongside an experienced teacher.
* Participation in classes and activities is optional throughout the retreat. All levels welcome!
